District Staff, Parents and Guardians,
Census 2010: It's In Our Hands
The goal of the 2010 Census is to count all residents living in the United States on April 1, 2010.
* The foundation of our American democracy is dependent on fair and equitable representation in Congress. To achieve an accurate assessment of the number and location of the people living within the nation's borders, the U.S. Constitution mandates a census of the population every 10 years.
* With only 10 questions, the 2010 Census questionnaire is one of the shortest questionainnares in history and takes just 10 minutes to complete.
* Every year, more than $300 billion in federal funds are awarded to states and communities and school districts based on census data.
* Census data guides local decision-makers in important community planning efforts including where to build new roads, hospitals and schools.
* Census data is used to determine how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as the redistricting of state legislatures, county and city councils, and voting districts.
Achieving a complete and accurate 2010 Census is in our hands!
Be counted in 2010.
Sincerely yours,
Wendy V. Szallay
Superintendent of Schools
